Topic #9

Nature's Way, a chain of stores selling health food and other health-related products, is opening its next franchise in the town of Plainsville. The store should prove to be very successful: Nature's Way franchises tend to be most profitable in areas where residents lead healthy lives, and clearly, Plainsville is such an area. Plainsville merchants report that sales of running shoes and exercise clothing are at all-time highs. The local health club as more members than ever, and the weight training and aerobics classes are always full. Finally, Plainsville's school children represent a new generation of potential customers: these school children are required to participate in a fitness-for-life program, which emphasizes the benefits of regular exercise at an early age.

Write a response in which you examine the stated and/or unstated assumptions of the argument. Be sure to explain how the argument depends on these assumptions and what the implications are for the argument if the assumptions prove unwarranted.

2-3줄에 있죠: "The store should prove to be very successful".

Write a response in which you examine the stated and/or unstated assumptions of the argument. Be sure to explain how the argument depends on these assumptions and what the implications are for the argument if the assumptions prove unwarranted.

Nature's Way franchises (NWF), most profitable!

3) Local health club

"The author assumes that NWF will be profitable in Plainsville as there are many people who live healthy lives" 네, 틀린말 한 건 전혀 없어요. 만약 영어가 잘 안되서 "The author assumes that NWF will be most profitable in Plainsville~" 이걸 매 문단마다 써야된다고 한들 꼭 그렇게 쓰세요!

 1) Nature's way franchises -> most profitable

- demographic data on Plainsville

- how do you find they all live in healthy lives?

- competition between (b/w) other industries selling healthy food & other health-related products

- their profit trends?

2) People in Plainsville live healthy lives -> increase in profit

- merchants: sample size? hard to generalize?

- merchants' reports: sample size, hard to generalize

- "all-times high": comparison b/w other products, period of time should be considered

3) Local health club member ↑ -> profitable

- local health club: sample quantity

- health club members in trend

- "high": indefinite amount

- weight training & aerobics full: starting # could be low at the first point

- could be an exceptional/temporary case

- doesn't gurantee that people will buy products

4) Childrens' buying ↑ -> profitable

- participate = buying exercise equipments? (not necessarily)

- how many children?

5) Succesful? Really?

- degree unwarranted (여기서 degree는 profit의 정도예요)

- people's willingness to buy products

- 한 번 사면, 계속 쓰는데 계속 살까?: cycle in buying new products may be slow
