City & Regional Planning, Public Policy ]

Ph.D, Planning & Public Policy, Rutgers Univ. (2016-2017, Fulbright)

City and Regional Planning

Last year, I read surprising news in the New York Times about Detroit’s significant depopulation and vacant cityscape. Alarmed by this startling example of modern urban collapse and feeling a strong sense of obligation as a researcher working at a national think-tank, the Korea Research Institute for Human Settlements (KRIHS), I immediately initiated a research project entitled Diagnosis of Korean Industrial Cities. This project was the first attempt to investigate the potential risk of economic instability facing Korean industrial regions. I analyzed the impact of the decline of a dominant industry on employment and on the overall local economy in eight Korean industrial cities, and concluded that their shared feature of a single-industry dependent structure suggests significant vulnerability to external shocks such as those experienced in Detroit.

This insight led me to question precisely how such Korean cities could more wisely prepare for and respond to these challenges. In fact, some Korean cities have already begun to experience erosion in certain manufacturing fields and suffer from the resulting depopulation. A handful are even facing the outright collapse of a core industry. Unlike in the U.S. where a broad swath of cities has undergone or is experiencing depopulation, and where experiments with various groundbreaking policy interventions are taking place under the moniker of Stronger Cities or Revitalizing Legacy Cities, these issues have not yet been seriously considered in South Korea and related solutions are either currently unclear or at least unavailable. This has fueled my desire to pursue advanced study in the U.S.

Design]

Master, Design, Carnegie Mellon Univ. (2016-2017, Fulbright)

Through pursuing a Master of Fine Arts, my objective is to acquire an interdisciplinary approach and expertise in User Experience Design (UXD) and to gain hands-on experience while conducting practical projects. Ultimately, I hope to incorporate what I absorb from the process with my career to date as a graphic designer.

In recent years, there has been a paradigm shift in the role of graphic design—from giving a form to information to designing relationships between objects and individuals. This relationship is referred to as User Experience (UX), meaning overall perception and feeling experienced in the course of using an object or system. People can check emails, find their way, and order books with their smartphones. UXD enables these functions both easy and enjoyable with just a few simple touches. This is attributed to the effort by which UXD tries to optimize ways to use the functions through various aspects such as industrial design, human–computer interaction, and even cognitive psychology.

[Second Language Studies]

Ph.D, Second Language Studies, University of Hawaii at Manoa, (2016-2017, Fulbright)

University of Hawaii at Manoa에서 Second Language Studies 박사과정 중에 있습니다.

I am pursuing a doctorate in education in order to conduct research within the classroom, to teach pre- and in-service teachers, and therefore to contribute to English language education in K-12 public school settings. For 12 years as an EFL teacher and a teaching material developer in e-Learning, co-teaching, Teaching English Through English (TETE) programs in Korea, I realized the benefit of educational research for effective teaching. Though reading academic journals is the easiest and fastest way to learn different teaching models and cutting-edge methodology to improve teaching practice, as shown in The Teaching Gap (Stigler & Hiebert, 1999), the impact of academic research has not been significant for teachers. Having communicated with teachers at open classes and teacher workshops of e-Learning and co-teaching programs as a presenter, I found most teachers think academic journals are only aimed at academics because they often seem too abstract or irrelevant to explain actual classroom circumstances. Therefore, I plan to improve my knowledge of language and literacy so that I can help build the bridge between research and teaching practice.
